Google Talk

So the rumors were true. Google has entered the instant messaging game with all the rest of the people (MSN, AOL, Yahoo, etc.). With the beta release of Google Talk, the internet giant is now entering the IM war. Google Talk, like the other IM clients, allow you to instant message friends and also have voice communications with those same friends. In order for Google Talk to work, you need to be a subscriber to GMail. Google Talk is free.

Google Talk does not support VoIP (Voice Over IP). This is the internet phone service that Vonage and Skype offer. I hope one day that Google does offer a VoIP service. Vonage requires its customers to pay for the service and also to buy hardware to use VoIP. Skype is free, but it does have a catch. It is a software only solution and you do have to deal with some ads. Also, they ask customers to give them money via PayPal. You see….not everything is free.

That’s the beauty of Google. There products do not force any adds onto you. If you look at the Google AdSense that they offer to webmasters, the adds that visitors see are only text. No flashy graphics to slow load times and no special software that is forced to install (thus we use Firefox).

Not much purpose to my posting, but hey, I’m a geek ;-).
