The Nation Changes Today
John Roberts was sworn in as the 17th chief justice of the United States. Note the phrase: chief justice. It seems like some people are not completely aware of what kind of implications this may have on the nation. I consider the US Supreme Court to be the most powerful body within our federal government. Screw the whole notion of “checks and balances”. Give me some other groups that in a single day can…
- Choose the president of the USA (which they did in the case of Bush vs. Gore)
- Create “law of the land” on a single ruling.
John Roberts not as an individual holds this power, but as a person whom can persuade the fellow judges to rule on his agenda. Justice Roberts did tell Congress that he would follow the constitution closely, but how can he ignore his religious beliefs and personal feelings on subjects like abortion. Bush can’t keep his bible out of the oval office. Roberts is a Catholic (which I am as well).
I am not saying that I have a problem with John Roberts. I would be saying the exact same thing no matter who is being sworn in. The Supreme Court is a big deal. It is something that we as Americans should pay attention to. This is history in the making for Christ sakes. Not since 1801 (John Marshall, age 45) have we had a younger chief justice. Roberts has the potential to rule for 4 decades!
