Good ‘Ol Boys Club

So the company I work for is based in a southern city. Every corporation will have a “boys club” of management. Being that this company’s HQ is located in the south, I like to refer them as the good ‘ol boys club. Business politics are fascinating, but also extremely frustrating. Especially when you want/need to do something good. The good ‘ol boys do not like change. They fight change. They will fight it all the way to the bitter end.

Anyway, my manager and I are trying to do good. We are trying to clean up some important data elements that the company needs to be accurate and properly monitored. Its current state is a mess. My boss and I could very easily just go into the system, make the changes, and be done with it. The problem is that we do not own those data elements. Therefore, we are reaching out to the owners requesting their input to make sure the data elements are set correctly now. Why create more work for more people by loading bad data? Guess who the owners of those data elements are? You guessed it; the good ‘ol boys. They want to fight us and say we are wrong because what we are changing will be us up-to-speed with current system/business requirements. These are NEW system/business requirements. The good ‘ol boys don’t like that idea. I bet that if they were the ones to suggest it, they would have no problem with it. Since my boss and I requested it, we are wrong.

Why are the good ‘ol boys try to make it difficult to do right? Why don’t they want good clean data and reports? All they have done to me is send out these huge emails and CC everyone explaining how wrong I am. Yet I have provided them proof that we have bad data. Thankfully the company I work for is not a publically traded company. I bet we would be reporting incorrect data to wall street.
