What Went Wrong

The rental house that I was going to rent was originally scheduled to be completed on 12/1. This was per a conversation I had with Peter Schaub, the landlord. On 11/25, I had to call his office to give them my SSN for a credit check and what not. He also expected I drop off the security deposit the following day. I met all of his demands, but could he keep his word? Nope…his words seemed to come back and bite him in the ass.

When 12/1 came around, the house was not complete. No carpet, no appliances, and construction debris everywhere. I called him and we postponed for another day. That day came and the same problem. I basically had to call him 2 – 3 times a week to get the story. If I didn’t, Peter would’ve never called. This song-and-dance of the house being ready on a date never seemed to work out. I kept hearing new move-in days every other day. Yesterday was the 15th of December. He is 2 weeks late. What if I was in another apartment or house and I had to be out by the first of the month? I would be hosed right now.

Last night, we talked. He accused my mom of having an attitude and he also said I was. At the time, I let it slide for a few minutes. He then told me to stop talking: “you have two choices. We can meet tomorrow and close up everything. You then cannot call me anymore. The second chouse is I will send back your security deposit.” Considering the amount of work that was remaining, I chose to meet him in the morning. I then stated “Peter, please do not threaten me or my mother. We just want to get this sorted out and completed”. He said “well, that’s it. You’re done.” He then like a mature adult hung up the phone. I called him back and left him a voicemail since he refused to answer. I told him he had 24 hours to return the security deposit.

Peter did eventually call me back. He probably was expecting to stroke his ego a bit and beg for the house. News flash: he is a asshole. He informed me that he would pick the money in the mail first thing in the morning. I thanked him and wish him luck on his future endeavors.

Peter Schaub owns about 45 homes in the Bellevue area. He’s an ass, let that be known. If something goes wrong with the house, don’t expect him to be a landlord and do anything. He will not do a thing. Peter will give you some speech about how he is the “hardest working man you know.” I tell you this, I know people who work hard but have one more thing going for them. They are honest.

Other people affiliated with Peter Schaub have told me how much of an arrogant ass he is. When Ed was renting the house from him, Ed refused to talk to him. When Peter’s spa wouldn’t work, he would send someone else out to deal with it. In Peter’s little inner-circle of friends, he refers himself as ‘God’. He also considers himself to be “god’s gift to women”. Peter has no problem telling you any of this.

With all that said, do you think it would be smart to live in a property owned by this dude? Sure it sucks that I have to go out and look for another place to live. The house we were going to rent was essentially brand new inside. That’s a huge plus, but the issues with Peter were out-weighing all the positives. I couldn’t trust him. I couldn’t count on him. His word was worth less then a penny. He was full of empty promises. Let’s say I was renting from him, do you really think I would want to use him as a rental reference? No way!
