Things That Are Comcastic
You know, sometimes I really wish I had HD available to me. I currently own a TV that is “HD-ready”, but because of some trees near my house, I will not be able to receive HD with DirecTV. I could switch over to Comcast, which would solve my problems, but I am currently under contract with DirecTV. Comcast does offer all the local channels in HD, but for some reason the best interface they offer into your TV is component video cables. No DVI or anything else.
With Super Bowl XL coming up this Sunday, having HD would be nice. ABC, the network broadcasting the Super Bowl, will be broadcasting the game with the latest technology offered in HD.
This year’s Super Bowl in Detroit is set to be the largest HD test so far, with ABC showing it in high definition using all kinds of new equipment. ABC sprang for an RF HD camera, which will bless us with wireless high definition video feeds of events in and out of the stadium where a wired HD camera just couldn’t go. Behind the players benches and in the stands, for example. Also being used are high-end camera lenses with Canon’s advanced Optical Image Stabilization system, perfect for long shots and extreme close-ups.

Hmm. Comcast, huh? I should have thought of that.
But here are two other things I have thought of:
1) Comcast is required by law to provide you with a set-top box that has Firewire out ports. See here, for example.
2) Go to radio shack, and buy a UHF antenna. For as little as $30-50, you can get most of your local channels right over the air, including KOMO in HD for free.
I have one of these, and just picked up one of these.
I decided to upgrade my antenna for a couple reasons:
First, I don’t know that I can run the same antenna I have into two HDTVs. Second, the antenna I have sometimes cuts out because it is attic mounted (and not outside) which is the nice thing about these antennas– you can put them in your attic!
Anyway, those are some options for you to consider. As for the contract, that’s a tough one. Perhaps the antenna will get you through the next few months when you can decide to make the move to Comcast.
