DirecTV: Force Software Upgrade
While browsing some forums about DirecTV cable boxes, I came accross an internet little hidden feature with most current DirecTV boxes (doesn’t include the old TiVo DVRs). Each box can be forced into a software upgade process.
- Restart the receiver
- When blue screen appears, on remote control press: 0-2-4-6-8
- wait a few seconds and receiver will begin downloading
Supposedly this process will only grab new versions but I have found that it downloads ‘new software’ everytime. The versions don’t change, nothing. I did find that after my R15 upgraded once my local channels disappeared and I am forced to get another box. Well, last night I was curious and I did another software upgrade. What do know….my local channels appeared once again and the box is performing nicely. I did find the most recent upgrade to the R15 DVR helped with the process of fast forwarding. The old software versions were really tricky and would cause you fast forward right through your show.
