Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS/GTX and Ubuntu Feisty

When it comes to Linux, I am a complete noob. I’ve been messing around with Ubuntu 7.04 on my new home PC. My biggest headache has been trying to get my Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS video card to work on Ubuntu 7.04. I can get the restricted drivers, and even the nvidia installer, to confirm successful install, but once the system reboots; X-Server fails to load.

I’ve been reading all the Ubuntu community forum postings about installing Nvidia drivers on Fiesty. I followed all the different install methods step-by-step. Some people have had some success, but not necessarily with my video card. Finally today, I discover an answer to all my problems:

Bug #91556 = Edgy and Feisty don’t work with nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS and 8800 GTX

It’s a relief to know that this a bug. At least I am not a complete idiot who can’t get a video driver to work. There is still hope for me yet…

I downloaded and installed Fedora Core 7. I currently have the nvidia driver installed, desktop effects enabled, and I am able to reboot my machine. Here is what I did:

    1. Install the latest Livna repository for Fedora
    2. Install the Yum Extender:

    # yum install yumex

    3. Get out of X (ctrl + alt + f1)
    4. Install the latest nvidia driver:

    # yum install kmod-nvidia

    5. sudo reboot

The machine booted up without any issues. Just before the Fedora login screen appeared, I could see the nvidia splash screen. Once logged in, the nvidia display settings applet was appear in my applications menu.

How is Fedora? I downloaded the Debian.iso and was planning on giving it a shot over the weekend.. .unless of course Fedora is too dreamy to pass up.

Honestly - I would give Ubuntu a try. Ubuntu is the linux distro that is pre-installed on Dell laptops. I find that the Ubuntu documentation is far easier to understand and find than Fedora’s. Use bittorrent to download the ISO files. You’ll get them faster that way.

Either distro will work fine for you if you want to dual-boot XP & Linux. They both use the GRUB bootloader. Just let linux replace the Windows boot loader and you’ll be off and running. The one area you’ll want to spend some time on is researching the process to install the drivers for your wireless card. In order to get WPA to work on my laptop, I had to install some extra stuff (ndiswrapper, etc.)

Ubuntu is the way to go and definitely more “noob” friendly.

This procedure worked perfectly for me with Fedora 7. I couldn’t believe how easily I achieved 3d Acceleration, particles, everything using this Nvidia driver from the Livna repository.

This driver is actually quite good. Bless Nvidia for finally making a linux driver that works.

However their own instructions are wacky. So are all the other various ways I was told to install the Nvidia driver.

Thank you J for this tip - easiest 3d driver install I’ve ever done in 5 years of working with Linux.

It worked like a charm with my Nvidia 8800 GTS 640mb. I don’t use Linux for gaming per se but I can say that Second Life runs smoother in Linux than in WindowsXP, and I am very surprised, but there it is. I am guessing this driver would get crushed by the Win driver in hardcore FPS testing, but for those who remember how it used to be getting 3d in Linux, this is (finally) big time performance.

I think Fedora is better than Ubuntu, but I prefer RedHat distros over Debian distros. Just personal preference.

I find the community and userbase to be just as large and helpful, perhaps moreso for Fedora than Ubuntu.

Also, Fedora users don’t seem to have that blind slavish fanboi attitude that the Ubuntu shouters have. They are the Linux world’s version of Mac users.

Linux is pretty much the same no matter what distro you use. It’s probably based on either RedHat or Debian, and you tweak it accordingly.

Size and helpfulness of the community DOES matter. Fedora competes very well with Ubuntu in this regard.

Didn’t mean to insult you J over your plug you gave for Ubuntu.

But hey, your fix here was for Fedora so you must like that flavor too.

You really helped me out here. Thanks guy/girl.

    Peace!
